Nearly all birds need water. You can significantly increase the number of birds visiting your yard by providing a source of water such as birdbaths. Our metal, glass and clay birdbaths are the perfect addition for any yard. They are shallow and slope gradually into the middle which makes birds feel comfortable when bathing. Many also accommodate accessories such as our WBU Water Wigglers.
Offering your backyard birds a source of open water in your yard will enhance your enjoyment of backyard birds. Whereas some birds in our yards do not eat seed and bird food from our feeders water is required by all birds. Through water you can attract an even greater variety of birds to your backyard including: American Robins, Brown Thrashers, Northern Mockingbirds, Northern Flickers, hawks, falcons, bluebirds, chickadees, cardinals, nuthatches, doves, woodpeckers, wrens, warblers, redpolls, finches, grosbeaks, jays and sparrows.
Keep in mind that some metal, glass or clay birdbaths are too fragile to leave outdoors all winter (even with a birdbath heater) and are best taken indoors and covered during the winter months. Watch the video at the bottom of this page to learn more about putting a birdbath in your yard.
Caring for your Metal and Clay Birdbaths During the Winter Months
With proper care a metal or clay birdbath will give you and your birds many years of enjoyment. While metal and clay birdbaths can withstand sun, rain and wind beautifully, freezing weather is it main enemy as you risk damage to the bath if water freezes in the bath. To protect your bath please take the following precautions, in freezing weather you have a couple of options. You can play it safe, clean and drain the bath and bring your bath indoors (a shed or garage would be suitable) where it will be dry. Or you can drain and clean the bath and cover it (with a tarp or something similar) so that water won’t collect in it over winter.
Our metal and clay birdbaths are compatible with our WBU Birdbath Deicer, which allows you to heat the birdbath and keep open water available for the birds during the colder months. However, before purchasing a deicer we ask you to carefully consider how you will clean and fill the bath during the cold weather. Heated birdbaths do require regularly monitoring and filling, approximately 3 times per week or more, depending on how cold it is. The colder the temperatures, the faster water will evaporate from your birdbath. With hoses away for the winter this means that filling and cleaning requires you to tip the birdbath over to get rid of old water, and a container of water to refill the bath. These metal birdbaths are large and heavy and may be difficult to tip in winter if they become frozen in place or there is a lot of snow. For all of these reasons and for ease of cleaning and filling, we suggest using a plastic birdbath with a heater during the colder months and your metal or clay bath during the warmer months.
Note: Glass Birdbaths are not as durable as metal and clay birdbaths and should be taken in during the colder months.
